What Magazines do You Receive

Category: book Nook

Post 1 by krisme (Ancient Zoner) on Wednesday, 02-Mar-2005 22:05:09

So what mags do you get in braille, on tape, or in some other format. Currently I get Dialogue, The Braille Monitor, the Matilda Ziegler magazine, Able News (my regional library records that one), The Catholic Digest, and for some reason Christian Record Services hasn't stopped sending me Children's Friend.

Post 2 by Char (The sexy canadian) on Wednesday, 02-Mar-2005 22:37:01

Well, I don't currently get any magazines, but i used to get the dialogue one when i was a bit younger... never read them though till i got older... I think that they are putting reader's digest on CD sometime soon so i may start getting that

Post 3 by krisme (Ancient Zoner) on Wednesday, 02-Mar-2005 23:15:07

Oh good. I know APH offers Readers Digest in Braille.

Post 4 by Jess227 on Wednesday, 02-Mar-2005 23:23:46

I get my materals in large print: Reader's Digest and The Braille Monitor. Hmmm isn't the Zigular for croatians? The name sounds familiar.

Post 5 by TexasRed (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 02-Mar-2005 23:30:09

Well, as you may have guessed, I get Bon Appitete.

Post 6 by krisme (Ancient Zoner) on Thursday, 03-Mar-2005 1:21:48

No, the Ziegler is a free magazine for all blind people around the world. It's produced in Braille, on tape, or you can get it by e-mail. I think it's in large print too, though I'm not sure. It's called the Matilda Ziegler magazine because in 1907 a wealthy widow named Matilda Ziegler, who had a blind son, put aside money to fund it.

Post 7 by Leafs Fan (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 03-Mar-2005 10:53:45

I get the Ziegler by e-mail. I get Readers Digest in Braille. I think I am still subscribed to Rolling Stone and Playboy and Progress, Conundrum and some others in Braille through CNIB, but they don't seem to come often anymore other than RD. Soon, all English language magazines the CNIB offers in audio format will be on one single DAISY CD that will come every month. I hate to say it, but I rarely read my Braille or CD mags anymore. I do all that stuff online! LOL I read a lot of the magazines and newspapers the CNIB offers on Visunews. There are lots of papers in both languages, but all the magazines on there right now are in French. This is fine for me, but I imagine many readers would like to see MacLean's etc. online since L'Actualité is already there. But we shall see. I like these services though! What's in Dialogue and Braille Monitor? Never heard of either.

I read online weblogs instead. I've been trying to get unsubscribed from wordsworthy forever, with no luck.

Post 12 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 03-Mar-2005 23:44:33

I get the Ziegler, Children's Friend, Young and Alive (the latter 2 from Christian Record Services), and The Rolling Stone, Ladies' Home Journal, and Conundrum (from NLS). And I might be getting more from there, as I love getting things to read in the mail. *smiles*

The ACB has where you can get their Braille Forum magazine either online or thru email, for free. And I think you can also get the NFB's Braille Monitor for free, thru their website or email. I used to read one called Travel Vision (that has to do with O&M), but I don't think it's there anymore because I can't find it. And then of course, they have the BlindWorld magazine online. *smiles* I really don't know of any others they'd have online. Oh, you can also get the Ziegler thru email if you don't want to get it in Braille or cassette, and you can read parts of it online.

what al does the ziegler talk about? and where do you find all of theese online? Whoever said the one about o&m, do you know where you can get it? I would like to read up about it. thanks. smile- angel

Post 17 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 06-Mar-2005 10:46:26

Actually, I made a mistake. Travel Vision is the publisher of the magazine, and the magazine is called Other Visions. I tried just now to get into it, by doing diffenert searches on Google, but when I would get on what would be their website, it says "Oops! There's been an error!". And then I tried to copy the link, but it wouldn't have been to the website because it gave me something like http://www.earthlink.error404 ... something like that. Sorry, I wish they still had that magazine, but like I mentioned, I couldn't even get to it when I tried to look for it. Well, I could but you know, it gave me that error message and that weird address.

Post 19 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 06-Mar-2005 11:04:19

Ziegler has different things: It first has a letter from the Editor, and towards the end it has a Reader's Forum section (where people can kind of discuss different issues and share ideas I guess), a Special Notices (where things can be bought, sold, donated, or asked for, and for other little announcements), a Recent Deaths list (I don't get what that's for but I think it's just to inform of former readers who have passed on), a Pen Pals section, and a section called Bits and Pieces (which I guess is for little trivial information type of things. in between the Editor's letter and the Reader's Forum, there are various articles about different things, a short story, and a poem. The cool thing about it for me is that especially with the Reader's Forum and Pen Pals, any reader including people from outside the U.S. can and do contribute, so you see ideas and points of view, and opportunities to find penpals from around the world, which I haven't found with other magazines. So I'd recommend trying it out; it's cool. *smiles*

To receive the Braille Forum from ACB, go to their web site: http://www.acb.org. Do the same for the NFB publication, However, I can't think of their web site off hand. I think it's probably http://www.nfb.org. Does anyone know how to stop receiving magazines from Christian Reccord Services? I still receive the Young and Alive one, and it is annoying! Lol. Thanks!

I used to get Roundabout and Blast Off, which were childrens magazines aimed at the 7 to 11 age group, then I obviously grew out of them (blast off wasn't half as cool as Roundabout had been). I used to get Missy (formerly Sugar and Spice ) I used to receive Welcome To A World Of, before RNIB stopped that one, I still get the NLB book bulletins and catalogues with new books tghey have for rent or for sale, I used to get Spotlight, another RNIB magazine on cassette, but I couldn't really follow it as well as if I'd received that in Braille, so I stopped getting them as well and I used to get Upbeat, a magazine all about music, latest album or box set releases and all kids of news, obituaries and things concerning all those gifted musicians and pop groups and bands out there, lmfao. Now I just get the said book bulletin magazines, a parenting one, You and your Child, which I've been receiving sdince I studdied Childcare and Health and Social Care in School and College and which I know will come in handy as I've kept practically all the issues for just over 7 years for that magical time when I have my own children, then I get another womens magazine, Aphra, all about well, health and beauty, womens fashion, hot gossip, women's marriage and you know what stories, lmfao.

I canceled my getting Ladies' Home Journal and Rolling Stones, and they stopped publishing Young and Alive I think a few years ago. But I still get/read the other magazines I mentioned. I replaced my canceled ones with Kiplinger's Personal Finance, and National Geographic. But I plan to cancel the Kiplinger's one. I don't know whether or not I'll replace it with something else though.

Post 36 by Cristobal (Veteran Zoner) on Saturday, 09-Feb-2008 18:41:19

I for a time subscribed to some magazines in Braille and on cassette, but they were often so behind when I got them, I just went ahead and canceled everything. Even now, the magazines available through Web Braille are more often than not way behind.

Post 37 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Sunday, 10-Feb-2008 10:12:17

I used to get Seventeen magazine, but because I was running short on space for books from the Special Collection catalog through the Braille Institute, I canceled my subscription.

Post 38 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Sunday, 10-Feb-2008 10:45:00

I receive The Matilda Ziegler Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Ladies' Home Journal. I used to get Cooking Light and Martha Stewart Living, but I haven't received either of those in years. I may re-subscribe, but I'm not sure. I also receive Braille Book Review, but since you can now read it on line, I'm going to cancel, to save myself some space. I also receive some ezines/newsletters from gophercentral.com, lhj.com, and LHJ's partnering sites. I wish that Cosmo was offered. There are a lot of articles in that magazine that sound interesting.

I bought a CCTV from an ACB member when I had usable vision, and he gave me what is called an "at large" membership to ACB even though I never joined the organization. As a result, I get a free copy in Braille each month of their magazine The Braille Forum. To the person who asked early on in this thread, The Braille Monitor is a similar magazine put out by the NFB. I used to get the Matilda Ziegler in Braille but have switched to the E-mail version. I also switched from the tape version of Talking Book Topics from NLS to looking it up on their website. I used to get Dialogue but got tired of it. I also used to get a magazine on tape produced here in Columbus called Newsreel but also got sick of it. The only other mag I still get on tape is health related. I get it from NLS. For some reason the exact name of it escapes me, but it contains three separate health newsletters, one of which is from Dr. Andrew Weil whom I like very much.

Post 40 by Ginny Weasley (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 12-Feb-2008 18:34:06

I get Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine on tape, Seventeen Magazine in braille, and talking book topics on tape and a few others i can't think of at the moment.

I don't get any mags now, but I'm thinking about subscribing to some soon. Can people from the U.S. subscribe to mags from other countries? I like the You And Your Child one. That sounds good Where do you get it? Parenting magazine is ok, but a lot of times, Web Braille skips months on it, which sucks. I used to get Seventeen, Young and Alive, Jack and Jill, before it got replced by Spider, and Braille Book Review. I miss Jack and Jill. It was really a great kid magazine. Too bad it's gone. I also think I might subscribe to Ziegler. What's The Dialogue? Anybody know of Ezines for parents that are accessible?

Post 42 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 04-Apr-2008 9:02:56

If you go to lhj.com/members, and sign up to be a member, you can sign up for many different types of newsletters. LHJ has their own newsletters, and they offer many others from partnering sites. Some of the partnering sites that cater more to parenting/baby/family include:

parenting.com
americanbaby.com
familycircle.com
child.com
healthykids.com

The site offers a whole bunch of newsletters, so check them out. If you go, be sure to turn off your flash player, otherwise navigating the site will be frustrating. Other than that, though, it's very accessible.

Personally, I enjoy reading Ladies' Home Journal. It features many different types of articles and topics, including health, beauty, fashion, relationships, animals, money, food, etc.
